Between 1962 and 1969 I was a reporter/photographer for The Monadnock Ledger, a New Hampshire weekly.
It was a great apprenticeship. I learned all the jobs from headline-writing to burning the plates for the offset press.
Many times every article on the front page off the paper was written by me and all the photographs taken by me. I did my own darkroom work and sometimes made the halftones as well.
I had a weekly column. (click)

During this time I also was editor for some "give-away" papers (The Winnepesaukee News, The Valley Penny Saver, The Keene Shopper).
I know what editors want and will use. I can write a news story with my eyes closed (5ws 2hs..pyramid. 17-word sentences, lots of names and personal pronouns, action verbs, few adjectives).
